Vision
In an era defined by digital transformation, sustainability challenges, and rapid technological convergence, the Academy of Engineering Sciences, Singapore (AESS) is dedicated to nurturing a new generation of engineers equipped with curiosity, adaptability, and global competence.
Engineering Horizons embodies AESS’s long-term commitment to developing future-ready talent capable of driving innovation across Singapore and beyond. We believe engineering is not just a discipline—it is a force that shapes economies, communities, and the planet’s long-term sustainability.
Mission
The initiative seeks to empower future engineers through four strategic pillars:
1. Advancing Frontier Technologies
Integrating emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, advanced materials, cybersecurity, and clean energy to prepare engineers for tomorrow’s complex global challenges.
2. Building a Holistic Talent Pipeline
Creating a continuous pathway from undergraduate mentorship to postgraduate development and early-career leadership programs, ensuring engineers grow not only technically but also ethically and socially.
3. Strengthening Academia–Industry Partnerships
Bringing together universities, research institutes, enterprises, and public agencies to co-develop solutions, accelerate technology deployment, and cultivate interdisciplinary problem-solvers.
4. Expanding Global Understanding, Enhancing Local Impact
Promoting international exchanges, joint laboratories, and multinational project teams, while ensuring engineering solutions remain grounded in Singapore’s societal needs and regional priorities.
Core Program Components
1. Innovation Lab Fellowships
A competitive fellowship supporting outstanding postgraduate students and early-career engineers. Fellows participate in AESS-supported research clusters such as:
Smart and Resilient Infrastructure
Renewable Energy and Green Systems
Advanced Manufacturing & Robotics
Security and Cyber-Physical Engineering
Fellows receive mentorship from leading experts, funding for project development, and opportunities to collaborate internationally. Expected outcomes include patents, publications, prototypes, or start-up concepts.
2. Engineering Leadership Academy
A year-long professional development journey for engineers with 3–8 years of industry experience.
Curriculum highlights:
Strategic engineering leadership
Responsible and sustainable engineering practice
Innovation methodology and systems thinking
Communication, project governance, and stakeholder engagement
Graduates present capstone projects at the annual AESS Engineering Summit.
3. Global Engineering Exchange & Challenge
An international challenge program jointly hosted with partner academies and universities.
Participants work in cross-border teams for two weeks to design solutions to real-world engineering problems, such as:
Tropical urban cooling
Offshore renewable energy monitoring
Low-carbon transportation systems
Climate-resilient infrastructure
Top teams receive AESS seed funding to advance ideas into functional prototypes.
4. STEM Outreach & Ambassador Network
AESS trains university students and young engineers to serve as STEM Ambassadors who conduct school workshops, hands-on engineering demonstrations, and public science engagement programs.
The initiative aims to inspire younger students to pursue engineering careers and increase diversity in the national STEM ecosystem.
Key Goals & Expected Outcomes
Train 150 Innovation Lab Fellows within five years, with at least 40% advancing into high-impact research or technology ventures.
Prepare annual cohorts of Engineering Leadership Academy graduates, with more than half progressing to technical lead or project manager roles.
Expand the Global Engineering Exchange to participants from at least 10 countries annually, resulting in multiple prototype-stage solutions.
Grow the STEM Ambassador Network to reach 40 secondary schools and engage over 10,000 students island-wide.
Partnership Ecosystem
The initiative is supported by collaborations with:
Singapore’s leading universities and polytechnics
Research institutes and engineering laboratories
Government agencies involved in innovation and workforce development
Regional and international engineering academies
Industry leaders across advanced manufacturing, sustainability, energy, and digital technologies
AESS oversees strategic direction, quality assurance, and long-term impact measurement.
