Sir Konstantin Sergeevich Novoselov
President of the Academy of Engineering Sciences, Singapore
Sir Konstantin Sergeevich Novoselov, FRS, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Fellow of the Royal Society, is one of the most influential material scientists of the modern era. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering work on graphene, a breakthrough that reshaped the fields of condensed matter physics, nanotechnology, and advanced materials, and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics.
Born in Russia, Sir Novoselov achieved global prominence during his tenure at the University of Manchester, where he and his collaborators isolated and characterized graphene, launching an entirely new class of two-dimensional materials. His research has driven major advances in nanoelectronics, flexible devices, quantum materials, energy storage, and next-generation manufacturing technologies. He has published extensively in high-impact journals and consistently ranks among the world’s most cited and influential scientists.
A strong advocate of interdisciplinary research, Sir Novoselov works at the intersection of physics, engineering, and applied sciences, promoting the translation of fundamental discoveries into practical innovation. He has also played an active role in international science policy, technology strategy, and the development of global research ecosystems.
Sir Novoselov currently serves as Director of the Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials (IFIM) at the National University of Singapore, where he leads major initiatives in advanced materials, device engineering, and functional matter. He plays a central role in shaping Singapore’s scientific and technological capabilities.
As a key driver of engineering and innovation in Singapore, he serves as the Founding President of the Academy of Engineering Sciences, Singapore (AESS), helping establish the Academy’s interdisciplinary, independent, and internationally oriented foundation.
Through his combined roles as scientist, engineering thinker, and technology strategist, Sir Konstantin Novoselov continues to exert a profound influence on global scientific progress and the development of emerging technologies.
